Summary:
The person selected for this position must be professionally prepared as a teacher of young children, with a minimum of 3 years' experience and an Associate Degree in early childhood, child development, or relevant field with a demonstrated knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices, nutrition, health, CPR, and first aid. This person will develop a classroom community of approximately 16 children ages two-six years. This person must be a sensitive and mature individual who is able to relate well to both children and adults and keep up-to-date on developments in the field of early childhood development.
Responsibilities:
The lead teacher will be responsible for supervising and managing their classroom, which will include a group of up to 16 children between the ages of birth to 6 years old. This person will be responsible for observing, documenting, and assessing the children in their classroom in order to develop a culturally responsive, developmentally-appropriate curriculum unique to their classroom communities' interests and needs. The teacher is expected to act as a role model and mentor for work study students, part time staff, full-time teacher assistants, and college lab students.
Essential Duties
Teaching- Curriculum and Assessment:
- Knowledgeable in good teaching practices and of child growth and development.
- Supervision and implementation of a developmentally appropriate program of children in accordance with the policies and philosophy of the center.
- Develop, implement, teach, and evaluate a curriculum to meet the social, emotional, physical, cognitive, cultural and developmental needs of individual children.
- Perform written and observational assessments to determine the developmental levels of the children and the effectiveness of the curriculum.
- Meet the needs of individual children with concerns for their interests, disabilities, special talents, and individual style and pace of learning.
- Consider individual children in relation to their gender, cultural and socio-economic background.
- Treat children with dignity and respect.
- Help children to become aware of their roles as integral members of a group.
- Complete ongoing evaluations on all aspects of the classroom and the effectiveness of the center.
- Maintain a safe, sanitary, and calm learning environment.
- Assist in joint housekeeping responsibilities.
Supervisory:
- Train, supervise, and manage, assistants. Perform ongoing assessments including an annual written evaluation.
- Teach, mentor, and model practicum course college students, cooperative work experience students, and other college and/or high school students using the ECLC as a laboratory site.
- Communicate regularly with the Director, college instructors, and high school teachers regarding student's progress and the effectiveness of the program.
- Serve as a mentor teacher with assigned student teachers through observing, advising, problem solving, modeling and offering constructive criticism on a daily basis. Prepare written mid-term, and final evaluations and letters of reference.
Partnerships:
- Honor families, seeing them as resources in the shared care and development of the child
- Maintain educational partnership with parents to help their children develop and learn
- Communicate daily with each parent receiving and providing information regarding his or her children
- Provide additional information and resources when needed
- Collaborate with early childhood degree program to develop learning lab site to ensure the integrity of best practices for teacher education.
- Collaborate with the director and assistant director on children, classroom, and program requirements
Center Operations:
- Participate in ongoing planning and evaluation of the Center's long and short-term program goals.
- Adhere to the National Association of Education of Young Children's professional code of ethics in relationships with the children, co-workers, students, and parents.
- Enforce parent and child written procedures and contracts.
- Plan and implement public relations activities and events that highlight early childhood education.
- Welcome, receive, and provide information to all visitors, parents, children, and students.
- Assist in conducting various self-study and comprehensive evaluation activities necessary to obtain national accreditation through National Early Childhood Programs.
- Adhere to professional standards through professional development. Comply with extensive NAEYC criteria: See standards enclosures.
- Present at professional early childhood workshops and conferences.
Health and Safety:
- Current certification in CPR and First Aid
- Demonstrate knowledge and follow universal guidelines in health and safety protocol for example: hand washing, latex gloves comply with American Pediatric diaper changing procedures, appropriate disposal of body fluids, completing injury/biting reports, knowledge and consideration of children's allergies and health issues daily.
- Recognize symptoms of communicable diseases and follow existing written procedures.
- Responsible for checking identification of adult picking up child from the center.
- Authorize a Central Registry screening background check and Fingerprinting for any record of allegations of child abuse, neglect or other concerning information
- Knowledge of emergency procedures and the ability to make sure all children and staff are cared for in the event of an emergency.
Other Essential Job Requirements:
- Other requirements as related by the licensing agency, including, but not limited to: obtaining at least 8 hours of professional development education yearly.
- Maintain assigned working hours; notify the Director in the event of an absence.
- Maintenance of a neat and professional appearance.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: - Associate's Degree from an accredited institution in Early Childhood Education, Social Work, Psychology, or other related field or a Childhood Development Credential (CDA)
- Minimum of 3 years' relevant experience (preferably in an NAEYC Accredited Program)
- Demonstrated knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices, nutrition, and health
- At least 18 years of age
- Be certified or ability to become certified in both CPR and First Aid
- Be willing to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with the Early Childhood Learning Center's Philosophy
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Ability to effectively organize and prioritize assigned work
- Must agree to background check and fingerprinting that reveals no allegations of child abuse or neglect
Supplemental Information Work Environment: Typical work environment is a classroom, kitchen, and office setting requiring normal to advanced safety precautions. Work is usually performed during the normal workday however, occasional early morning, late evening and weekend work may be required. This position will work closely with children, so extra safety precautions will be required. This position is frequently exposed to bodily fluids (excrement when changing diapers or toilet accidents, blood due to scrapes and other injury, and exposure to mouth and nose fluids when wiping/cleaning nose & mouth/face). Frequent periods of time will be spent outdoors supervising children on playground in various weather conditions. Occasional traveling between campus buildings and between schools in various weather conditions.
Physical Demands:
Employee is regularly required to sit, speak, hear, stoop, crouch, use hands and fingers to handle materials and use computer, feel, and reach/lift with hands and arms. Frequent lifting/carrying of up to 30 pounds will be required (picking children up, etc.). Less frequent lifting/carrying of up to 50 pounds may be required (office supplies, paper boxes, children etc....). This position requires a lot of movement, due to working with children.
Remote Work Eligibility: Unless otherwise noted, all positions provide vital support to Casper College and require the successful candidate be available to work on location at the Casper College campus.
